Since the First Iberoamerican Mission Congress: "Light For the Nations" was held in São Paulo, Brazil November 23-28, 1987 launching the Iberoamerican Missionary Cooperation (COMIBAM), three decades have passed in the consolidation of the movement that is not only here to stay for the foreseeable future, but will most likely continue to play a vital role in the global south mission movement from Latin America to the unreached. It has been a joy to be a small part of this movement over these last twenty years even as the gringos have characteristically been held at arm's length. Nevertheless, I have been blessed and impacted such as when in Granada, Spain, during the III Mission Congress of COMIBAM, flags of all Latin American countries were paraded in front of cross-cultural workers as they entered the arena, not failing to mention the incredible gesture of hospitality shown each worker as they received Board and Room for the event. This is a movement that will continue to push the envelope of mission to the global unreached even with the warts, challenges and proverbial "Latin emotionalism" that so often accompanies such movements.
Next month August 22-25, 2017 will be the IV Mission Congress: "Mission With Jesus" (http://comibam17.net) that will initiate decade four. My wife and I will not attend this Congress as we'll be commencing our sabbatical with commitments already in the works. Nonetheless, we'll be in prayer for the movement and in prayer especially for those many we have been blessed to know personally as they lead the Congress (David Cardenas is the current COMIBAM president, a personal friend and Colombian!). Join with us as we glorify God for what He is doing to draw Latin Americans into the harvest fields of the world.
