Waiting and listening. Two words we dislike hearing as they remind us of our propensity toward impatience and quickness of speech. However, a wise proverb of Solomon once given serves us well to heed... "Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors" [Proverbs 8:34, ESV].
Such waiting and listening is not a deceitful, or sly "listening in on God" as our charming graphic above portrays. Nor is it a quick 'lick and a prayer' so to speak as we get on with our daily chores. Rather, biblical listening, watching and waiting will necessarily require concerted effort to be given in contemplative reflection upon God, His Word and our lives juxtaposed life in general. To be honest in confession, our family often finds it difficult to give sufficient time to waiting on, and listening to God for anything and everything, from future steps we might take to our more important present attitudes and Kingdom witness. Nevertheless, we believe our attitudes and character deficiencies can only be corrected with deep abiding, waiting on, and listening to God. Nothing less will do.
Contemplative waiting and listening takes time and may require a major readjustment. It may entail getting away from "life as usual" into some new environment more formidable to such divine interaction. Often we will make excuses for any such adjustment... "I can't because of my job" or "I don't know how" or "What would others say?" There may be truth in such assertions, but the shortness of our lives in Christ must make for prioritizing such liaisons with God. Such times of "waiting on, and listening to God" will not only positively impact our lives in Christ, but will also open significant doors of opportunity in countless unforeseen ways.
It is with this in mind that we have decided to "wait on, and listen to God" in a new season. Click here to see what this means for us for the future.
